Hier arbeitet er es erstmals literarisch aus. Wir folgen dem Ich-Erzähler einen Tag lang durch Heidelberg und verlassen die Stadt am Ende gen Frankfurt am major. Doch zuvor erleben wir die alltägliche regimen- das Frühstück mit dem variety, das Verkaufen der Stadtzeitung in der Fußgängerzone. Der Protagonist nimmt die Stadt mit allen Sinnen warfare, definiert den Heimatbegriff über Gerüche, Bilder und Geräusche. Es ist ein stark assoziatives Erzählen, das den Roman prägt. Der Tagesablauf wird immer wieder unterbrochen durch die Gedanken an die Kindheit, den Tod der Mutter, die Studentenrevolte. Buselmeier lässt uns am Verfall teilhaben, am Verfall der Stadt, der Ideale, die ihn umtrieben. Klage wird dabei zu Anklage, Hass zu Selbsthass. Der Zerstörung der Stadt wird die Utopie der Erinnerung gegenüber gestellt. Seit 1988 hat Buselmeier literarische Führungen durch Heidelberg veranstaltet und seinen Willen, die Heimat vor jeglicher Zerstörung zu bewahren, intensiviert. Kaum ein Schriftsteller ist ähnlich untrennbar mit der Stadt, in der und über die er schreibt, verbunden. Oder, wie es Greiner ausdrückt: »Buselmeier ist ja der Heidelberg-Forscher schlechthin.«
